Real vs. Atletico - A Tactical Derby Showdown

Sep 26, 2024

Gaétan Lajeune

From Militao’s opener to Correa’s late equalizer, this match had all the ingredients of a classic: brilliant individual performances, tense tactical battles, and moments of drama that could’ve changed everything. Let’s dive into the post-match analysis and see how it all played out! 👇

A Stalemate That Benefits Barcelona

The Madrid Derby ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, and while neither side could claim victory, the real winners might be sitting in Barcelona, smiling as their rivals both dropped points.  🔵🔴

On the pitch, both teams were well-matched. Atlético edged possession with 51%, but Real Madrid’s 89% passing accuracy showed their comfort on the ball. Despite firing 12 shots each, neither side truly capitalized on their chances. With an xG of 1.28 for Atlético and 0.76 for Real, it’s clear that the finishing left something to be desired. 🧐

Both teams will feel they could have done more, but for Real Madrid, this feels like a bigger missed opportunity. A win would have pushed them ahead in the title race, but now they must regroup and reflect on the chances that got away.

Same Formation, Different Execution

Both sides lined up with a 4-4-2 formation on paper, but the way they interpreted this setup couldn’t have been more different. 🧠

For Atlético, their front two rarely played like a traditional strike pairing. Instead, they morphed into a 4-3-2-1, with Sørloth as the lone striker and Álvarez taking on a hybrid role—drifting wide and linking up with Griezmann in a number 10 role. This flexible shape allowed Atlético to overload certain areas and find space in Madrid’s defense. ⚔️

Real Madrid, meanwhile, were more structured. Vini Jr. stayed wide on the left, constantly tormenting Molina, while Rodrygo floated between lines, seeking space and combining with Vini to create dangerous moments. Their interplay caused constant headaches for Atlético’s defense, and it felt like a breakthrough could come at any moment. 🔥

Despite these contrasting approaches, Atlético’s defensive discipline held firm. But in derbies like these, one moment is all it takes to flip the script…

xG Flow: The Battle of Missed Opportunities and Critical Goals

From the opening whistle, both teams were evenly matched in terms of xG (expected goals). Real Madrid started strongly, racking up chances in the first half, while Álvarez came close on a couple of occasions for Atlético. But as the first half ended without a goal, tension gripped the Metropolitano. 😬

But it was the second half where things really kicked off. Atlético made tactical changes within the first 10 minutes, and the game picked up pace. You could sense that a goal was coming. And when Vini Jr. was fouled just outside the box, you could hear the Real fans roaring in anticipation. Modric, as sharp as ever, took the free-kick quickly, catching Atlético off guard. The ball found Vini Jr., who whipped in a stunning cross to the far post. Militao, rising above the defenders, controlled the ball brilliantly and slammed it past the keeper with pinpoint accuracy. 💥 Madrid had struck first!

But this wasn’t the end. Both teams then traded blows like two heavyweight boxers in the final rounds. Each side pushed forward, looking to counter, but their world-class keepers refused to be beaten again. It looked like Real would walk away with the win, but in the dying moments of the match, Atlético found their equaliser. Galán’s perfectly timed through-ball split the Madrid defence wide open, and Correa calmly rounded the keeper to slot home. 🥅

The Metropolitano erupted. In the blink of an eye, the game had flipped, leaving both sides with plenty to reflect on. But that’s the beauty of the derby—it’s never over until the final whistle.

Controlling the Zones: Atlético’s Wing Play vs. Real’s Central Command

Both Atlético and Real Madrid had distinct areas of dominance on the pitch. 🗺️

Atlético focused their danger from the flanks, with their wide play proving difficult for Real’s full-backs to handle. Their overlapping full-backs and wingers made sure to stretch Madrid's defensive line on both sides. But while Atlético thrived on the wings, Real Madrid took complete control of the central areas. ⚖️

With an extra man in midfield, Madrid capitalized on the absence of Mbappé, allowing players like Modric and Valverde to dominate possession and dictate the game from the heart of the pitch.

Their composure and ball retention were crucial in keeping Real Madrid’s structure intact, despite Atlético’s relentless pressure from the wings. 💪

Defensive Battles: High Pressure vs Deep Defending

Both teams were closely matched in terms of aggressive defensive actions, with Atletico recording 15 tackles and 12 aerial duels, while Real Madrid notched up 15 tackles and 11 aerial duels, indicating a balanced battle for dominance in duels. However, the way they applied pressure on the pitch reveals different strategies.

Atletico's defensive actions, primarily concentrated in their own half and especially near their penalty box, show how they were forced into deeper defensive positions, absorbing pressure from Real Madrid. With 42 ball recoveries made predominantly in their defensive third, Atlético clearly aimed to shut down Real’s attack and limit their space in critical areas. 🛡️

On the other hand, Real Madrid’s defensive actions were more evenly distributed across the pitch, particularly in the middle third. Their 43 ball recoveries, paired with a high number of interceptions (14) in advanced areas, illustrate their intent to disrupt Atlético’s build-up play early. By pressing higher up the pitch, Real sought to control the midfield and keep the pressure on Atlético, forcing them to play out from deep. ⚔️

The difference in defensive setups was stark—Atlético’s deeper block against Madrid’s high press, with both sides using their unique approaches to keep the match balanced.

Passing Networks: Atlético’s Left-Sided Focus vs Real Madrid’s Balanced Approach

Throughout the match, Atlético Madrid’s buildup play was heavily focused on the left side. The connection between Reinildo and Conor Gallagher was crucial, with a high volume of passes exchanged between the two. This emphasis on the left played a key role in Atlético’s attacking transitions, but it also made their overall offensive play more predictable. By relying too much on one side, they lacked the flexibility to switch play and catch Real Madrid’s defense off-guard.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, displayed a far more balanced approach. Luka Modric was the conductor in the midfield, dictating the tempo with his precise passing. Unlike Atlético, Madrid’s passing network was spread evenly across the pitch, using both wings and the central areas to build attacks. Supported by Federico Valverde, Modric helped Madrid maintain control of the midfield, giving them the ability to dictate the flow of the game. 🎯

This control was further reflected in the defensive structures of both teams. Despite the tactical differences, Atlético and Real Madrid held similar defensive lines, with only a marginal difference in their average positions—33.52m for Atlético and 33.34m for Real Madrid. This cautious positioning highlighted both teams' desire to limit space and prevent counterattacks. 🛡️

Where Real Madrid stood out, however, was in their versatility. While Atlético focused much of their play down the left, Madrid’s central dominance, spearheaded by Modric and Valverde, allowed them to shift their attacks with greater fluidity.

By distributing the ball more evenly across the pitch, Real Madrid kept Atlético’s defense guessing and maintained greater control over the tempo of the match.

Griezmann vs. Modric: A Showdown of Midfield Mastery

In this derby, we witnessed two of the best playmakers of our generation go head-to-head—Antoine Griezmann and Luka Modric. Both maestros in their own right, yet their approaches to controlling the game couldn’t be more different. 🧠💥

Griezmann thrives on being direct, always looking to make things happen with forward-thinking, risk-taking passes. In this game, he attempted 6 progressive passes, constantly trying to unlock Real’s defense. However, his xT from passes was lower than usual, sitting at 0.07, which highlights how Real Madrid managed to limit his effectiveness in the final third. But still, Griezmann’s vision and audacity kept Atlético’s attacks alive. 🎯

On the other side, Modric showcased his trademark precision, completing an incredible 61 out of 64 passes for an outstanding 95.31% accuracy. His ability to pick out teammates with both short and long balls was on full display. What sets Modric apart is his composure—he created 3 big chances, orchestrating play from the heart of midfield with a calmness that makes him one of the best in the world. 🌍🔥

Both players had their moments, but Modric’s influence on the game’s tempo and his ability to dictate play from deep meant he edged this battle. Griezmann, meanwhile, couldn’t quite unlock Real’s defense as much as he might have hoped, but his constant attempts to break lines kept Real on their toes.

Two legends, two different styles, and one fascinating duel on the biggest stage. 💫

The Madrid Derby always promises drama, and this latest clash certainly lived up to expectations. Despite the 1-1 scoreline, the game was rich with tactical battles, individual brilliance, and moments of magic that could have swung the result either way. Real Madrid's controlled possession and balanced play through Modric’s midfield wizardry kept them ticking, while Atlético's determined defense and reliance on key wide areas highlighted their grit. ⚽💥

Real may have dominated the midfield, but Atlético’s defensive resilience and ability to strike late ensured they held firm, snatching a point and frustrating their city rivals. This was a derby of fine margins, where each team had their moment, but neither could fully capitalize. 🔥

As we reflect on this tense encounter, it's clear both sides will take positives—Real from their precision in midfield, Atlético from their defiance under pressure. And with the season still in its early stages, this battle for supremacy in Madrid is far from over.
